Re-Animator : Considering The Future

Re-Animator

Just when you think you're getting somewhere, and the end's in sight, you have a "crisis of faith" (for want of a better phrase) and all of a sudden you're in a bit of a quandary.

I think I've come to the realization that Re-Animator wasn't really heading in the direction I wanted it to. So, even if it ever got to where it was supposed to be going, that might not end up being the right place. Confusing, I know.

So, the upshot of that is; there's more than likely going to be big changes afoot. It's hopefully going to end up the same as it was originally supposed to, but in a different place. And it'll still be 2D.

It's either a moment of genius or utter insanity. Only time will tell which. Maybe it'll be both.

Oooh, what's that, over there, on the horizon? It couldn't possibly be some sort of milestone, like a release or something, could it?

Yes, you know what, it might just be. After rather a protracted hiatus (not as painful as it sounds) we've been hitting the development trail quite hard over the past few weeks. And, believe it or not, some sort of momentous event is quite possibly on the cards in the (hopefully) not too distant future.

The Chipmunk plugin is now complete (see here), the Wheaterbics demo is now ported to the latest API, consequently error handling and development support is greatly improved, it properly works on Linux and Windows, and loads of other goodies. Probably.

All that's standing between now and a release is;
- Porting RetroWare to the current API
- Creation of a couple more, already planned, examples
- Write a couple more tutorials
- Package stuff up
- Write some docu-bloody-mentation, finally

Stay tuned, hopefully it won't be another three years in the making.

In a vain attempt to make ourselves (by which I mean me) look more professional, Re-Animator is now listed on Launchpad. Some of the stuff that's in the Documentation section of this site (like the bugs/features on the TODO list) will be moved over there (to the Bugs/Blueprints sections) and the Bazaar repository is mirrored over there for safety's sake.

You can find us (by which I mean Re-Animator) here;
https://launchpad.net/reanimator

In other news, we're polishing our Chipmunk ready for (hopefully) our Retro Remakes 2008 competition entry. Physics and particle effects a-go-go is the plan.

Good grief it's been a long time between drinks. But we're back, and the big news is; we now run on Linux.

Yup, it took a bit of buggering about (mainly because Ubuntu was running v1.8 of SpiderMonkey) but it wasn't too tricky all things said and done.

You can find a picture of it running on Ubuntu in the gallery.

There are a couple of other more minor updates;
* Binned the proposed massive refactoring because, basically, I couldn't be arsed.
* Reviewed and cleaned up the JavaScript interface though
* Enhanced the binding generator so named things (like moveables) can be accessed like proper associative arrays
* Changed the callback system to be more O-O and automatically handle a "game state" style setup
* Replaced the standard memory-manager with a leak-detector, and spent ages chasing down all the leaks
* Optimised the garbage collection algorithm to reduce memory usage
* Ported the tutorial and a couple of other demos to the updated API

Now we're hopefully ready for a full-on coding and testing frenzy when the Retro Remakes 2008 Mega Fox Hypnosis Competition starts in September.

Fingers crossed.

Infrastructure : May The Source Be With You

Always. Or at least, quite soon.

We've finished tidying up the source tree, and lord was that ever a dull thankless task, and are currently grappling with the Bazaar version control system. The initial source has actually been commited and the repository has been published to this server, but I'm not going to tell you where just yet. You wouldn't be able to compile it anyway, since I haven't packaged up all the dependencies just yet.

More soon. Then hopefully someone will port it to Linux!

EDIT: The source is now available. See the Documentation section for details.
